FacadeFlex

Adaptive Facade Simulation Tool in Early Design Stage

Adaptive facades (AF) are building envelopes that can automatically adjust their states in response to short-term weather fluctuations, daily and seasonal variations in weather, and changes in occupants' needs. Facade design plays a crucial role in the energy efficiency and occupant comfort of buildings. However, current adaptive façade (AF) systems often lack personalized control loops, leading to energy inefficiency and discomfort for building occupants.

During the early design stage of AFs, designers are always not able to predict the performance of the AFs until an actual prototype is built and tested in real life. However, the time and money cost for constructing an actual AF prototype is high. Therefore, this project aims to propose a simulation software that is especially designed for AF performance evaluation: FacadeFlex. Such simulation tools will be able to help the architects assess their AF designs in the early stage and provide optimized solutions back to the architects, thus enabling the architects to revise and modify their designs before constructions.
